Round or flat: Everything is possible

Braids are textile constructions which yarns cross each other in diagonal direction. The material used and the the  size of the yarns can be very versatile, depending on the application.

We distinguish between round braids and flat braids. The round braids have an oval or round cross section; according to the application we talk about strings (technique), cords (cloth), cable (electrical engineering) or ropes (medium and heavy execution).

Flat braids are also called laces.

Strength is your strength

An outstanding feature of braids is that their load capacity compared to similar products, made with other techniques, is considerably higher. Standard braids have only a low lateral stability. Due to this property they can be sewn to other textiles without problems. On the other hand they can be made rigid and stiff with inserts and finishing treatments.

High load capacity is very popular

Because of the special properties, braids can be found (often hidden) in many different applications. Some examples: Clothes and shoes, candle wicks, sash cords, water ski ropes, mountaineering ropes, yachting ropes, parachute lines, fishing nets, mooring lines, medical applications such as catheters or dental floss, overbraided high-pressure tubes, ground cables or harnesses.

Textile industry: productive interaction of requirement and solution

Offshore: where you can fix the strength

In the offshore industry more and more steel rope constructions are replaced by textile ropes, e.g. made from polyester or UHMPE fibers. Different constructions are used as mooring lines, hawsers and towing lines.

Technical Braids: the golden thread for the future

The demand for different technical braids (and the braiding technology) keeps pace with the technical progress. For example:
  • In the medical industry finest braids for sutures or stents.
  • In the automotive industry monofilament hoses for the assembly of electrical installation.
  • In the electrical industry overbraided electrical or telecommunication cables and isolating glass fiber braids.
  • Braids made of wire like sanitary pipes, high pressure hoses and earth straps.
  • Gland packings and gaskets, braided with glass fiber, ceramic or graphite yarns to seal rotating spindles, pumps and valves or as heat insulation.

Composite materials: braiding in new dimensions

For aeronautics, automotive industry and space travel our machines braid composite materials to round or flat constructions but 2,5-D overbraiding and 3-D braiding is also possible.
